ABOUT THE ARTIST
Oscar was born in Brownsville, Texas, but moved to the Austin
area after falling in love with it, and his wife, in 1974. He graduated from Texas State University with a degree in Art Education, but decided not to teach. Instead, he worked with troubled youth for the next seventeen years, primarily as the Director of a residential treatment center. His mission was to prepare teens for emancipation by teaching self-suffiency and employment skills. He remembers this part of his journey as painful, challenging and ultimately, emotionally rewarding.
Soon after turning forty,
Oscar decided it was time to return to his original vocation. He resigned his position and re-entered the studio. He felt the need to express some of the feelings that his patients had shared through his own paintings and sculptures.
The Artist in his own words:
I have always been a student of world history and philosophy as they consider the ideal of man as "warrior". Writings on the Native American way of life, the Japanese code of Bushido and the fables of Carlos Castaneda have been major influences on my work. Even though my artistic style is closer to Contemporaty Realism, I have a high regard for Dali's Surrealism. I use stark settings to evoke a timeless reality. I believe that a successful painting should invite the viewer to participate visually, intellectually, or metaphorically to walk into that place and time.
